Just back from 9 days in the saddle, and it was GREAT!!!

Someone asked for details in my previous post, so here goes...

Leaving Spring Branch, TX.  ( Just north of San Antonio ),  Hwy 281 North to Blanco, 1888 to Fredericksburg, 87 north thru Mason, Brady, San Angelo, Big SpringLamesa, 385 north to Leveland, Littlefied.  Stop for night.

385 north Hereford, Dalhart, between here and the OK border, the road was perfect!  It was like a closed racetrack with 80+ MPH sweepers, not much to see, so lets have some fun!!  Got the OK border and the road was in terrible condition!!  Good thing it only took 30 mins or so to get thru OK.  Still on 385 to Lamar, Co, 50 West to La Junta, Pueblo,  I-25 North to Colo Springs.  Stop for night.

Ride to top of Pikes Peak,  14,110 feet.  Above the clouds, it was cold, 38 degrees on top and made us all a little dizzy due to elevation.  CAREFULLY ride back down into breathable air, stop at halfway point and catch or breaths.  Go thru Garden of the Gods, and then continue West on 50 to Salida.  Stop for night.

50 West to Gunnison, 149 South Lake City, Creede, South Fork.  This was probably the most scenic and enjoyable part of the entire ride, if you haven't been here, you need to do it.  160 South to Pagosa Springs.  Stop for night.

Continue West to Durango, 550 South to Aztec, NM, Bloomfield, 64 East to Dulce, Chama, Tres Piedras, Taos, pick up the enchanted circle and go around to Red River, stop for night.

Finish circle, back in Taos, 518 South to Las Vegas, 104 East to Tucamcari, ride some of old Route 66 and stop for night.

209 to Clovis, 84 South to Lubbock, 87 South to Lamesa, Big Spring, San Angelo.  Stop for night

87 to Fredericksburg, 1888 to Blanco, 281 South to Spring Branch,  Home.

A little over 2600 miles and a Great ride.  Weather was almost perfect, only got rained on twice, and it was more of a sprinkle, had 40 mph crosswinds in East COLO for about 80 miles, ( that wasn't fun ), nobody laid it down, and we all saw some beautiful scenery and had a Great Ride!!

Just wanted to share this experience with others who can appreciate it... Later...

HWY 149. That is one of my favorite roads.

Glad you had a good time.

Good for you!!! Must have been a great time I'm sure. I may take a spin on 149 when I'm out there for NASSIR-2.

I do plan to do the Enchanted circle on my way out. What can you tell me about it?? How long would you say it takes to do the circle?

The enchanted circle isn't a very long ride and getting there required riding thru some uninteresting terrain.

here's a link:

The circle is only about 100 miles long.  It was a nice ride, but not a must do it.  There was quite a bit of road construction, which means alot of loose gravel.

Hey, did they pave the whole Pikes Peak road? Last time I drove it the upper half was gravel.

There are 2 sections of gravel.  The road is approx 20 miles and there is about 6-7 miles of gravel.  Most is hard packed, but it has loose spots.  Gotta stay on your toes.

The wife and I crawled up Pikes Peak back in '71. The gray matter no longer remembers how much pavement there was then.

I had a 1965 Plymouth Satellite with a Posi-tract rear axle. Climbed really good, but those icy turns were scary because the front tires would not make that car turn on ice
