I successfully replaced the bad stock TPS in my '85 1200 LTD with one from a Honda car using Oregonwinger's instructions.  I documented the process in a pdf that you can download at http://www.box.net/shared/defb78dogw .

   I d-loaded the new pdf, Paul, and it looks excellent.  Again, very well done.  :)   Makes me almost wish I had another one to play with.  Those are indeed quite a machine.  I think I'd go for a SEi this time, as I like the color combo.  Doesn't show dust very much. That dark red I have now, is absolutely terrible for showing everything.   Constantly cleaning it. 

   Did you see what that LTD went for on Ebay? And with low miles, I bet it has issues, related to sitting idle.   6500.00!!   Wish I had a few dozen.  I'd post the link, but it's a mile long, and I don't know tiny url.  Should learn, I guess.  Too lazy, eh???!!   lol   I don't see a link insertion tool on this "modern" Wow.  Even old RA antique software forum has that feature.

Bob, thanks.  I am going to cut the back off the original TPS sometime and see if it would be possible to mate the guts of one of the car TPSs to the body of the original TPS.  That would make it a direct-replacement without much monkeying around.

The color is the one thing I really don't like about the LTD.  It is not so much the gold color, but rather the dark panels.  Makes me think of a Ford Country Squire Wagon :P.  I talked to an autobody friend about getting it repainted, but it would take a lot of work in prep to get it ready to paint.  If the paint was degraded on it, I would consider it, but it still shines up pretty much like new.  I always wanted a white wing - I am going to wait to see what comes out for 2009 and may eventually get a 2008 or 2009 (maybe even a 2010).  No rush, though - as long as we can keep substituting parts for the LTD/SEis, they do the job nicely.

Tinyurl is very easy to use - just go to http://www.tinyurl.com and paste the link in the link area and click the button and it spits out the shortened url.  Although, after I made the link it did not take me directly to the page, but rather to a Tinyurl page with another link to the ebay page.

There are any number of these "Link Shortener" services out there.  I tried http://www.urlot.com for example and it made http://www.urlot.com/1sjlzo which DOES go directly to the ebay page.  The disadvantage with using any of them is that if the outfit ever goes down (or worse) out of business, then your links won't work anymore.

I think I would add a few more thousand $ and move ahead at least 10 years rather than buy something that old (wait - what am I talking about - I have one :shock:!).  To each his or her own, I guess.

This software will auto-convert what you type to a link if it is in the correct form.  There is also an Insert Link button on the toolbar to the left of the {} button.

We need to remember, however, that Bob Anderson is the one who originally figured this out and made it work.  All I did was to follow his instructions and make a write-up as I did it.

It is great to see some one out there still working with the 85 LTD. I just got one recently and I am really enjoying it. I have found a car fuel filter to work temporarily while flushing out the fuel system it was only $14 instead of Honda's $43

I ran into problems with my TPS conversion.  The bike started missing and got worse and worse until it was almost unrideable unless you would go over half throttle.  I took it apart and found that the TPS had developed radial play that was making the voltage go crazy.

The problem is not with the concept or the installation, but rather with fleabay junk.  I don't know if I just got a bad TPS or they are all marginal, but if you are thinking about doing the conversion, I would try to source the TPS from somewhere else.  The problem is that as far as I know Honda only sells the TPS attached to the throttle body and charges big bucks for the assembly.  It is possible, however, that there are other quality replacements being sold through auto parts stores or elsewhere.  Of course, another possibility is to get a used one at a wrecking yard.  If anyone finds a good source for these TPSs, please post here.  I am not going to redo my pdf instruction sheet, so please keep in mind that ebay may not be a good place to get the TPS from.

Instead of trying to find another Honda car TPS, I decided to try something else.  There was a post on the gl1200goldwings forum (http://www.gl1200goldwings.com/index.php) by someone who found an industrial rotary sensor that he thought would work from Mouser Electronics (http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?qs=y%252bTtbMcwHOmiMUGRCazcYg%3d%3d ).  I had originally thought of using that, but went with the Honda car TPS when I found you could get them on ebay.  I went back and ordered one of the Mouser ones and its connector and made it work.  It took a LOT of work to get it to fit, but I got it done yesterday and rode about 50 miles and so far, it works perfectly :banana:.  I took pictures of this install as well and will write up a pdf document for it when I get a chance.  I attached a picture of the Mouser installed on my LTD.  It is made in the USA and seems to be very high quality.

More info about using the BEI-Duncan TPS instead of one for a Honda car:

What I decided to do instead was revisit a thread started by Jim Roney over at the gl1200goldwings board at http://www.gl1200goldwings.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=172

He gave very specific details about the BEI-Duncan TPS, but he never followed up as to if he made it work or not.  I bought one and the connector and DID make it work.  It took a lot more work than using the Honda car one, but so far it is working absolutely flawlessly.  I will make another PDF instruction sheet for installing the BEI-Duncan when I get some time (I took pictures).  In the meantime, attached are a few of the pics I took.  If anyone is interested in doing the BEI-Duncan conversion immediately, PM me and I can help you out.
