after owning her for 3 years?, i finally pulled the throttle wide open, the speedometer stopped at 107 MPH

my cruising speed is at 75 but i want to know if she should go faster. would a K&N Air filter improve my mpg and maybe increase my max speed?, i rebuilt my carbs 2 years ago and been running only on premium and run seafoam every once in a while.
she runs smooth carbs were mechanically synced the carbs and she wont shake anymore at high rpms. the plugs are less than 5k miles and were cleanned about 600 miles ago.

the overall weigh on the bike was my fat 160kg butt. saddlebags empty trunk had my spare half helmet. windshield its a memphis shades tall. brakes are not dragging and im running 40 PSI on the front and 37 on the rear.

fuel filter was replaced when i rebuilt the carbs, about 10k miles ago she doesn't seem to starve for fuel, she will keep the peace at WOT without coughing.

should i worry? i have the feeling that if theres something i can do to get more speed, will definitely lower my mpg :action:

I'd say with 100K miles on it you're doing pretty good in the top-end department William.

What did you ever do with that exhaust you got for it? Put it on yet?

I don't think so.

The K&Nair filter doesn't seem to have any effect on fuel mileage ..... My '80 with the K&Nhas the same performance and mileage as my dad's '80with the stock filter. Been running theK&N since '81. Mine was the test bike. Was so unimpressed that we never changed his filter to K&N.

since i own the bike, i never changed the filter, its a paper filter, mechanic told me to soak it on fuel and repeat the process until the fuel doesn't get so dirty, then blow it dry with air compressor. will this actually clean the filter or i am just wasting fresh fuel :(?

An air filter is only $10, why try to wash it at all? You run premium? I thought the higher the octane, the lower the flash point, firing earlier. Maybe the octane ratings are different in Mexico? Runs pretty good at 87.

air filter here is unobtainable. i actually found a store that sells the K&N in mexico city.
should i go paper air filter or k&n?

if i bring my frame and engine number (because they wont quote or check availability for any part without frame and engine numbs) to honda they may take up to 60 days to get the filter if they get it. if they dont they will say oh wait another 60 days. i dont like to wait. i've heard horror stories about paying for stuff and it never shows up at the local honda stealer. we only have one and their main business is selling 125-150cc bikes for pizza, fast food delivery and some atvs, i've never seen a cruiser or a sport bike on their show room. i mean NEVER.

I am not much of a fan of trying to wash a paper filter. I have used compressed air to blow dirt out of them in the reverse direction.

I think your bike is doing just fine. But, unless the fuel there is horribly bad, I would use just regular 87 octane. That is all the bike needs. Higher octanes have a higher flash point, and that makes it harder for the plugs to fire the stuff.

You could try the ebay route? like here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...12da121280a02693d74407fffb2c48&rvr_id=&ua=WXS?&itemid=220587564806#ht_500wt_956
shipping was $9 to Mexico, bringing total to $20. What a pain to get parts, huh? Can you order from any good sites for parts off the web?

I'm not sure if that was a new filter or used? Why would anyone buy a used filter? I checked out the USPS for shipping options - holy cow that's a lot!

to Mexico:
Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope* (up to 4 pounds) $11.45 12-1/2'' x 9-1/2''
Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box* (up to 4 pounds) $11.45 8-5/8" x 5-3/8" x 1-5/8"
Priority Mail Regular Flat Rate Box (FRB-1) (up to 20 pounds) $26.95 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2"
Priority Mail Regular Flat Rate Box (FRB-2) (up to 20 pounds) $26.95 13-5/8" x 11-7/8" x 3-3/8"
Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box (up to 20 pounds) $33.95 12" x 12" x 5-1/2"

I would run Premium gasoline in Mexico, the Regular there was not very good the last I tried it.
If you can get a K&N you should do it IMHO.
I run one on my bike and like it.
At least it is designed to be washed and oiled.

Don't forget I can get you paper air filters and ship them down to you from the DHL location in Ensenada. I promise less than 60 days.

The Honda shop in Ensenada was the same way - just the Pizza delivery bikes and that's all.

I've run Pemex Magna and Pemex Premium in the GL-1200 with no problem. Compared to the gas in the states, which is becoming more and more Ethanol, the GL-1200 likes Pemex better.

107 isn't bad, William. The tall windshield and air cleaner factored in.

We won't factor your weight, though. That can't have anything to do with it.

Mine runs out of steam around 115, with the stock shield and air cleaner. No added chrome to slow it down.

Well William !!! Now you have the bad boy inside of me stirred up. I may have to go down to the long, flat and straight Georgia Rt. 82 and find out.:doh::doh:

I did the old "What if" thing on both my GL1100's, both with fairings, and i got 110 mph out of the '80 and 115 out of the '81.

I didn't want to try to push it any further coz the fairing started to creak on the '81 (Honda original). The Vetter on the '80 was really quiet but you could feel the pressure agianst the windshield.

Also, the 1200 had slightly lower power rating than the 1100.

All in all your speed is nothing to be concerned about IMHO, unless you're being chased by the Federales, in which case you're screwed.
